What does the Digital Engagement Editor do and what kind of skills will this person need?

The Digital Engagement Editor is an integral team member in the newspaper’s Editorial Department vital in publishing press releases, monitoring the emergency radio scanner, and maximizing the content produced by our various reporters and editors.


Good typing and writing skills, a strong attention to detail, and knowledge of the AP Style are required for this position.


What you’ll do


  • Listen to the scanner for breaking news: traffic accidents, fires, pursuits etc. Tweet out breaking news and possibly post it to the website/Facebook.

  • Check emails for content/story ideas to post/inform reporters about.

  • Post our regularly produced editorial content to various locations including our social media pages.

  • Assist in the day to day editing of content for publication to the website and for print.

  • Monitor the website to ensure continuity and publication.

  • Monitor social media pages including The Union’s Facebook page and comments section.

  • Daily archiving of our finished pages produced for The Union’s E-edition.

  • Some writing and occasional phone interviews will be involved.

What you’ll bring

  • AP style news presentation


Helpful skills but not required

  • Previous journalism experience or experience working in the news gathering industry

  • Photography and photo editing

  • Video and video production

  • Graphic design/page layout

  • Podcasting or voice narration

  • Degree in journalism

The position is currently 32 hours a week, Wed-Sat, 10 a.m. — 7 p.m. with the potential for more hours and a starting pay of $19.50 an hour. Retirement program as well as medical, dental and vision benefits will be available following completion of a probationary period. Work outside of the stated schedule may be required on occasion.
