Cascadia Media Company is seeking a leader to shape next steps for its award-winning Cascadia Daily News and its regional magazine, Cascadia Daily Life.


As the leading source of news and information in Northwest Washington, the company wants an innovative editor equipped to successfully meet journalism goals and drive revenue/audience growth – with a demonstrated passion for both. This is a new role that will oversee all the companys editorial products.


For this expanded role, we seek an experienced journalist and creative thinker – someone who is not only seasoned and a problem solver, but also someone with an entrepreneurial mindset to help establish a shared company vision.  A critical part of the editor in chiefs role will be as a consistent partner with business office leadership. Experience in growing readership and revenue is key.


Journalism is our priority and the editor will build on the success already established at Cascadia Daily News. The editor will uphold the highest ethical standards, be a model for professionalism in and outside the office and should be equipped to defend journalism decisions. You will join other company leaders as the public face of the organization, upholding integrity and embracing flexibility.


Cascadia Daily News has a staff of 16 full-time and part-time passionate journalists, many in their early years working in the industry. Experience as a mentor is important. The new editor will partner with the magazines executive editor and newsroom editors to establish best ways to plan and parse content in the two print publications and on the publications’ websites.


The editor will work with the new Director of Marketing & Audience Development to establish and meet goals for social media engagement, multiple public events, newsletters and other digital channels under a shared brand.


The company is at a crossroads. We want a leader with clear eyes who can assess and adjust publishing practices or formats. We aim to reach two different audiences with our publications - Cascadia Daily News aggressively covers daily essential news in Whatcom and Skagit counties. Cascadia Daily Life reports and reflects on life in a region stretching from Seattle to Vancouver and the San Juan Islands to the North Cascades. The publications complement and support one another.


What skills will the ideal candidate have?


- The new leader will help execute the companys shared vision across all platforms: stories, photography, magazine, newsletters, video, podcastsevents and social media with audience goals woven into every decision. How do we serve readers and viewers, and how do we measure impact? The leader wont be afraid to make hard choices and will decide what to prioritizeand deprioritize-- in the quest to serve a demanding audience and succeed as a business.


- A knowledge of Pacific Northwest culture and audience is desired.


- Excellent editorial judgment, 10+ years in content leadership or journalism.


- Five to 10 years of extensive editing experience across a variety of reporting topics, from hard news to features to opinion content. Well-versed in AP style.


- Some background in magazine publishing is a plus, in addition to working with visual journalists - designers, photographers and videographers.


- Knowledge of how to best use social media channels, newsletters and role of the audience engagement editor for reader engagement. An understanding of mobile readership habits is important.


- The ability to work in a collaborative, supportive way with peers and direct reports is essential. - Experience in successfully coaching and inspiring a newsroom through meaningful change and reviewing performance goals.


- Deep knowledge of analytics tools for news products and channels and how to best use the data.


- Experience in budgeting for future growth


- Experience in public speaking and hosting community events is a plus.


- Understanding AIs significant impact on the industry will be part of this role.

Salary range, depending on experience:

$120,000 to $140,000

Location:

This position is full-time in the office located in downtown Bellingham, Washington.  


Hours:

Hours vary, but 9 to 6 primarily Monday through Friday. Weekend or evening work will be required based on events and the news cycle. 


Start date:

This position is open until filled.  The ability to start before August 1, 2026, is desired.
