Description:

The Santa Fe New Mexican is seeking an experienced and driven Deputy City Editor to help lead our newsroom. This is a role for a top-notch journalist who wants to grow as an editor — someone with strong news judgment, a passion for local and statewide storytelling, and the ability to mentor reporters while also rolling up their sleeves on the daily news desk. You’ll work closely with senior editors to keep The New Mexican among the most respected news organizations in the state, Southwest, and nation.

What You’ll Do

  • Directly supervise a small group of reporters and guide them through daily coverage and longer-term projects
  • Take the lead on the daily news desk as needed, ensuring timely and compelling coverage across all platforms
  • Collaborate closely with the Assistant Managing Editor, Managing Editor, and Executive Editor
  • Drive digital-first content strategies, including posting with urgency and elevating our biggest stories
  • Generate strong story ideas and contribute bylines when needed
  • Mentor team members and manage performance with empathy, clarity, and high standards
  • Engage with the Santa Fe community and support leadership on events aligned with the company’s journalistic brand
  • Defend the public’s right to know; apply knowledge of open-records law, libel law, and copyright
  • Evaluate and onboard freelancers as assigned
  • Measure audience performance and use data to inform coverage decisions

What We’re Looking For

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an editor, reporter, or photographer in a news organization
  • Substantive experience or demonstrated potential as a leader and manager
  • Excellent news judgment with the ability to balance hyperlocal coverage with stories of statewide impact
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Proven multimedia, digital, and social media skills, including experience leading a multimedia news team
  • Deadline-driven and solutions-oriented with strong listening skills
  • High ethical standards and a commitment to watchdog journalism
  • Availability for a schedule of approximately 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends as news demands

Preferred:

  • Deep knowledge of and connection to the Santa Fe community, including its political, cultural, and social landscape
  • Spanish language skills

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation
  • Benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and paid time off
  • The opportunity to lead journalism at one of America’s oldest continuously operating newspapers
