Description:

About The Lever:

The Lever is an award-winning, reader-supported investigative news outlet dedicated to following the money and holding the powerful accountable. Founded in 2020 by journalist David Sirota and a team of reporters, The Lever has quickly attracted a robust following thanks to its in-depth investigations and uncompromising analyses of matters related to local and national politics, business, corruption, and corporate power. With its fast-growing subscribership, The Lever is building a news organization devoted to holding power accountable.

The Position:

The Lever is looking for an experienced full-time executive editor to upgrade and run our fast-paced remote newsroom and update it to meet the current moment of multiple formats and platforms – including print, video, and social media. The executive editor will oversee The Lever’s editorial direction, assign stories, and allocate editorial resources to ensure that the newsroom is consistently delivering important, compelling, and attention-grabbing reporting.

You will update, set, and constantly optimize the overall editorial strategy aimed at making The Lever a go-to source for reporting on the intersection of politics, business, and culture. You will help reporters enterprise stories. You will deploy editorial resources to cover breaking news in The Lever’s coverage areas. You will work with and direct the audience and video teams to make sure coverage is growing The Lever’s audience.

This is a job for a genuine news and data obsessive who wants to lead an up-and-coming, award-winning news outlet into its next phase. You are the kind of person who is ready to shake things up and who has worked in multiple formats, including print and video. You are the kind of person who already knows what political stories went viral this morning and what, if any, role The Lever should play. You are steeped in moment-to-moment political and cultural discourse, with an eye on using The Lever’s resources to influence that discourse.

You are not someone who is satisfied getting beaten to a story, nor are you someone who needs to wait for direction. You are focused on building a team that consistently gets timely scoops and makes a significant impact – and you thrive in environments where you can rapidly experiment, learn, and move on to the next idea.

This is a full-time, salaried, and remote position with benefits including a generous health care stipend, office expense reimbursements, and paid time off.

Qualifications:

  • At least five to eight years of experience as an editor, preferably with experience covering or directing coverage of politics and policy, and doing so in a breaking news environment.

  • Excellent top-level editing skills, with the ability to turn around clean, accurate, and well-crafted copy on complex, highly scrutinized matters on tight deadlines.

  • A proven ability to track and respond to the ever-shifting news cycle.

  • A proven track record of managing and supporting a hardworking editorial staff.

  • Impeccable organization skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Deep knowledge of U.S. political and financial systems.

  • A strong grasp of what makes for a good Lever story.

  • Commitment to The Lever’s reader-supported business model and independent approach to accountability journalism.

  • The passion, imagination, and ambition needed to build a transformative news organization.
