Description:
Stars and Stripes, the editorially independent news organization covering the U.S. military worldwide, anticipates an opening for a U.S. bureau chief to lead its stateside reporting from Washington.
The U.S. bureau chief directs coverage of the Pentagon, Capitol Hill and veterans affairs and manages reporters based in D.C., Washington state, Virginia, Texas and Georgia.
In recent months, Stars and Stripes has faced external pressure over newsroom direction and content. Our journalists have continued to report independently, and our coverage has remained accurate, balanced and fearless. The U.S. bureau chief will play an important role in sustaining that standard.
This is a hands-on editing role. You’ll assign stories, edit and work closely with reporters and desk editors to push coverage forward. The job calls for steady daily judgment, quick reaction on breaking news and the ability to spot the potential for an enterprise story. You’ll also collaborate with colleagues based in our Europe, Middle East and Asia offices to produce great journalism.
Experience covering the military or national security is helpful but not required. Comfort working across print, web, social media and video platforms is critical as we reach readers wherever they get their news.
Benefits for qualifying candidates include a federal pension, 401K with employer matching, tax-free shopping at U.S. bases, a mass-transit subsidy and more.
Stars and Stripes operates under federal law intended to protect it from censorship or direct news management by military or government officials. Our newsroom continues to produce independent journalism serving troops, veterans and their families.
