About the Role

Raw Story is seeking an experienced Managing Editor with exceptional news judgment, strong

leadership skills, and a deep understanding of the modern breaking news landscape.

This is a high-impact newsroom leadership position overseeing a team of senior editors and

writers responsible for driving Raw Story’s daily breaking news operation. The ideal candidate

thrives under pressure, moves quickly without sacrificing accuracy, understands what resonates

with digital audiences, and can consistently identify stories and angles ahead of competitors.

The Managing Editor will play a key role in shaping editorial priorities, coaching newsroom

talent, maintaining publishing standards, and ensuring strong audience performance across

platforms.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of editors and writers covering breaking political and national

news

• Identify emerging stories, overlooked angles, and high-interest topics before they reach

saturation in mainstream coverage

• Edit and publish a high volume of stories daily while maintaining editorial quality and

accuracy

• Coach and develop writers and editors to improve performance, story selection, headline

writing, and audience engagement

• Make fast, confident editorial decisions in a high-pressure breaking news environment

• Collaborate with senior leadership on newsroom strategy, workflow, and coverage

priorities

• Monitor audience trends, traffic patterns, and platform performance to inform editorial

direction

• Ensure stories are optimized for homepage placement, search, syndication partners, and social distribution

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of experience editing breaking news in a fast-paced digital newsroom

• Strong understanding of U.S. politics and the daily political news cycle

• Exceptional headline writing and story framing instincts

• Proven ability to manage and motivate high-performing editorial teams

• Ability to balance speed, accuracy, and audience engagement simultaneously

• Experience working with analytics platforms and audience-performance metrics

• Comfortable handling multiple competing priorities and deadlines throughout the day

• Availability to work early morning hours, including regular 6:00 a.m. ET starts

• Ability to step into senior leadership responsibilities and operate independently when

needed

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience managing homepage strategy for a national digital publication

• Familiarity with SEO, social publishing, syndication, and platform-specific headline optimization

• Experience in politically focused or investigative journalism environments

• Competitive salary: $85,000–$95,000, depending on experience
