Description:
OREGON JOURNALISM PROJECT · PORTLAND, OREGON
Investigative Reporter
We're looking for a scoop-hungry reporter to dig into state and local government — and tell the stories that matter most to Oregonians.
The Oregon Journalism Project is an independent nonprofit news organization with a single mission: fearless accountability journalism for and about Oregon. Our small, highly skilled team covers the state with an intensity that rivals any major outlet.
We're hiring a reporter who wants to do the most important work of their career.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Produce accountability journalism with compelling leads, solid framing, and sourcing that is deep and diverse.
Break exclusives through cultivated source networks, records requests, data analysis, and probing interviews.
Dig into government budgets, contracts, purchasing records, and audits.
Cover state and local government with the rigor of a national investigative team — including legislative, regulatory, and judicial processes.
Tell those stories through the lens of Oregonians most directly affected — from the coast to the high desert.
Travel the state when the story demands it, balancing long-form investigations with timely breaking news.
Collaborate with colleagues on visual, data, and multimedia storytelling while also working independently on enterprise stories .
WHAT YOU BRING
At least three years of reporting experience, including demonstrated work covering state and local government.
A track record of breaking news and producing investigations that have made a difference.
Experience with public records law, budget analysis, contract review and audits.
An entrepreneurial approach and the narrative skill and judgment to focus complex policy stories on the people affected. A passion for Oregon — its communities, its politics, and the accountability gap that OJP exists to fill.
A bachelor's degree; coursework in journalism, political science, or public policy is a plus.
