Description:
The Green Valley News and Sahuarita Sun in Southern Arizona are looking for an editor who is a strong leader, knows the value of local news and enjoys engaging with the community. It’s a big job, and you have an experienced newsroom to help. Among the duties:
Editorial leadership: Story planning, enterprise reporting, editorial writing as needed.
Digital & multi-platform: Newsletters, video, directing social media, websites.
Community engagement: Public speaking, forums, meeting with readers.
Administration: All the typical stuff.
Our newsroom regularly breaks regional news and our share of state stories.
We cover two communities with twice weekly (Green Valley) and weekly (Sahuarita) newspapers and 24/7 web and social media presence. Newsletters are key to maintaining connection throughout the week; the staff helps with these. The communities border each other and there is overlap in interests and, thus, content.
We use Blox CMS (Content Management System by Town News) for writing and posting online.
WHERE WE LIVE
Green Valley is largely a retirement community of 27,000 people about 20 miles south of Tucson and 40 miles north of Mexico. If you love the desert, mountains and outdoors, we’re it. We cover government and agencies, but we’re really about community: We write about people, trends and lifestyle in the context of a highly educated, involved and politically active readership. They expect a lot from their local newspaper and website: gvnews.com.
Sahuarita has a median age of about 37, full of young families and lots of great stories. The population is about 37,000. We have quality schools, strong leadership and a town that has planned well for the future. It is among the fastest-growing communities in the state. Website: sahuaritasun.com. Tucson is 20 minutes north, full of restaurants, culture, concerts, sports, strong post-secondary options and shopping. We guarantee you’ll fall in love with the area.
We are looking for stories that help set the agenda, that address uncomfortable issues, are relevant and meaningful, and that tell the rest of the state what we’re all about. Water, mining, aging, economy — all issues we cover.
The current editor — on the job 17 years — is moving to another position in the company and will be on-site at least one day a week during the transition and always available (he’s also the editorial director for the company). Green Valley/Sahuarita is a key property for our company, Wick Communications.
WHAT WE NEED
Experience: We need somebody willing to engage with the community, whether it’s leading a forum, speaking engagements or a “Meet the Editor” gathering at a local coffee shop. We need a strong writer and experienced editor who knows how a newsroom works. We need somebody who can come up with enterprise ideas and contribute to projects.
This is an exempt position; the workload varies. Nights and weekend work as needed; much of that can be done remotely, but you’re expected to be in the office during the week. It’s not a remote job.
Salary: We offer a competitive package of pay and benefits, including medical, dental and 401(k). We are an equal opportunity employer.
Salary range: $55,000-$65,000.
Interested? Send a resume, clips of your reporting and a cover letter laying out what you can bring to the table to Dan Shearer (dan.shearer@gvnews.com). Apply electronically by June 3, 2026.
