Description:
Position Overview:
This full-time reporting position covers news throughout Horry County, with a primary focus on Myrtle Beach, Carolina Forest, Socastee, Surfside, and Murrells Inlet, including city council meetings and local government. Manages daily news and breaking news, assists with editing and production, and is responsible for the front cover story and photos for the Myrtle Beach Herald and the Carolina Forest Chronicle.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and produce content for both digital platforms and print publications, including contributions to MyHorryNews special sections.
- Report in the field, attend weekly newsroom meetings, and assist with page proofing during production cycles.
- Create content for the Visit tourism publication.
- Respond to breaking news with timely reporting and social media updates across Facebook, X, and Instagram.
- Create the cover front story and photo for the Myrtle Beach Herald and Carolina Forest Chronicle. Contribute a minimum of 4–5 stories per week across digital and print platforms, including both in-depth and quick-turnaround pieces.
- Collaborate closely with the editor to plan coverage and develop story ideas.
- Capture and contribute visual content, including photos and videos, to support reporting.
Requirements:
- Strong writing skills with a solid understanding of AP style.
- Previous newsroom experience preferred.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing assignments in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to support team coverage during major news events (e.g., hurricanes, floods, protests).
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field preferred.
