Description:

Metro Editor

Reports to: Managing Editor

Full-time, Exempt

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette seeks a smart, knowledgeable, skilled journalist to be the metro editor for a news organization set in one of America’s fastest-growing areas. We are looking for a savvy editor with a reporter’s spirit who can help our staff find the stories that others miss. We want an editor who can fuel journalism that holds to account people of high political rank. We want a journalist who can deliver to an intelligent, educated and diverse audience the depth and details no one else can.

Our brand is built on ensuring our reporting thoroughly informs readers about Northwest Arkansas and the issues that matter most to the people there. We expect our journalism to lead the region and the state.

If you know the journalism craft, are fearless in pursuit of it and have a relentlessly inquisitive mind; if you are committed to the collaborative environment that makes newsrooms strong; if you see the larger picture that drives great journalism, we want to hear from you. We do not want to hear from people with no daily journalism experience and especially not from those who’ve always wanted to give journalism a try. We are interested only in serious inquiries from people with a proven record in the business.

We are looking for journalists with a record of:

  • Working with reporters across the newsroom to find ideas and help capitalize on reporting opportunities.
  • Managing multiple complex projects simultaneously with strong organizational skills, clear prioritization and consistent follow-through from concept to publication.
  • Skilled editing, showing the ability to help reporters deliver cogently written, air-tight stories.
  • Using public records to find stories, unearth facts and fuel reporting.
  • Finding the best use of the digital platform; able to apply all the available tools to serve readers.
  • Balancing large-scope project management with a steady production of quick-turn stories.
  • Navigating the legalities, including producing unassailable copy that safeguards the institution and accessing the information needed to deliver the story.
  • Seamlessly working with digital teams to ensure the best possible reader experience.

What’s needed to be qualified for the job:

  • At least three years of experience as a reporter.
  • A belief in objective reporting that ensures stories are free from actual bias.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Skill in leading journalists of all talent levels and all ranges of experience.
  • Knowledge of both media and public records law.
  • Proficiency in coaching and managing.
  • Steeped in digital best practices.

We offer paid time off, health insurance, and retirement plans. Our benefits are designed to support you and help you succeed in your role.

This is a safety-sensitive role; candidates must pass drug screenings and background checks and maintain a satisfactory driving record.

We are proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, age, genetic information, or any other legally protected status.
