Description:
The Vineyard Gazette, an award-winning newspaper on Martha’s Vineyard with a reputation for rigorous, in-depth reporting, is seeking an experienced journalist for a newly created fellowship. Working within a collegial newsroom, the successful fellow will be responsible for originating, researching, and writing high-impact enterprise stories and long-form features for both our print and digital platforms.
A seasonal island community, Martha’s Vineyard is a microcosm of many of the challenges facing society including climate change, immigration growth and stability, income inequality, and affordable housing. This fellowship offers an opportunity to delve into critical local issues as well as cover nationally important issues that begin or resonate at a grass-roots level. We are seeking a seasoned journalist with the ability to become quickly immersed in the community and identify and write compelling stories that make a difference.
The fellowship is named for the Gazette’s influential editor and publisher, Henry Beetle Hough, an ardent conservationist and prolific author. He and his wife Betty owned and ran the Gazette from 1920 to 1968, transforming it into a nationally recognized newspaper that exemplified the role of a local newspaper in serving and shaping a community.
This position is based full-time on Martha’s Vineyard and comes with fully funded housing in a furnished, well-appointed 2-bedroom guest house. Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes health benefits, a 401(k) plan and paid vacation. The fellowship has a minimum two-year commitment, with a possible third year. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. Occasional travel as well as night and weekend work is expected. The fellow must have a valid driver’s license and a car.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and produce signature enterprise-level stories, investigative stories, and features about Martha’s Vineyard.
Cultivate relationships with sources, gather and analyze data, and file public records requests to support in-depth reporting.
Serve as a mentor to early-stage journalists in the newsroom.
Other reporting duties as assigned by the editor.
Qualifications:
A minimum of three years of professional reporting experience.
Excellent skills in news writing and reporting, combining superior news judgment, evocative writing, and excellent storytelling.
Proven digital newsgathering fluency.
A track record of exemplary journalism, high ethical standards and respect among peers.
Knowledge of and commitment to the company’s mission.
Bachelor's degree required, master’s degree in journalism is a plus.
Compensation includes a $65,000 salary and housing in a 2-bedroom furnished house, comprehensive health benefits, and a 401(k) plan with employer matching.
To apply, please submit a cover letter (as described below), resume, and five clips to publisher@vineyardgazette.com.
Your cover letter must include your interest in Martha’s Vineyard. It should also include at least one story idea or pitch. Candidates should submit at least 3 clips that show excellence in evocative writing, through high-impact news stories and by highlighting the voices of local communities.
