Job Description
Raw Story has been breaking stories the mainstream press won’t touch for more than two decades — and we answer to no one but our readers. We’re independently owned, free from billionaire influence and political pressure, which means our newsroom pursues the truth wherever it leads.
We’re looking for an experienced, relentless Investigations Editor and Reporter to lead our exclusive content team while producing high-impact original reporting of their own. This is a hands-on leadership role for a journalist who thrives on both managing reporters and chasing stories.
If you’re driven to expose wrongdoing, move fast on breaking news, and deliver journalism that holds power to account, we want to hear from you.
Job Responsibilities
Lead Raw Story’s investigative team, mentoring reporters and developing stories from pitch to publication
Assign, edit, and publish high-impact investigative and enterprise reporting
Generate original scoops and exclusive stories with urgency and authority
Write timely, engaging articles based on breaking news, often on tight deadlines
Balance longer-term investigations with daily content
Build and maintain sources, pursue document-driven reporting, and identify underreported angles
Partner with the Editor-in-Chief to shape editorial strategy and investigative priorities
Use analytics and audience insights to refine story selection
Ensure accuracy, fairness, and adherence to legal and editorial standards across all content
Qualifications
8+ years of experience in political or investigative journalism, including leadership experience
Proven track record of breaking news, enterprise reporting, and impactful investigations
Strong editing skills and experience managing reporters or small teams
Ability to work quickly without sacrificing accuracy or editorial judgment
Deep understanding of U.S. politics and the current media landscape
Experience developing sources and working with documents, records, or FOIA
Comfort working in a fast-paced, digital-first newsroom environment
Exceptional writing ability; a writing/editing test will be part of the application process
Benefits
Competitive salary: $115,000–$125,000, depending on experience
Health insurance with minimal employee contribution
401(k) with a 3% employer match plus an additional 3% employer contribution
To Apply
Send your cover letter, resume, and clips to applicant@rawstory.com.
Please include links to your best investigative work and share story ideas you believe deserve immediate attention.
