About the Role
Inside Philanthropy is hiring a reporter to cover the flow of money and influence in American politics, and its connection to nonprofits. This role focuses on campaign finance, lobbying, political nonprofits, and the intersection of policy and economic power.
This is a temporary, full-time contract position to see how things go over the first few months, with the goal of being permanent. You’ll follow the money behind major political decisions, and translate complex financial structures into clear, compelling reporting. As part of the job, you will work with AI tools and need to be comfortable with them.
What You’ll Do
- Report and write original stories on campaign finance, lobbying, PACs, and political spending
- Improve stories generated by other reporters and AI tools.
- Analyze public records (FEC filings, state databases, IRS 990s, lobbying disclosures)
- Develop sources across politics, advocacy groups, and regulatory agencies
- Collaborate with editors and (where applicable) data/reporting teams
- Pitch enterprise and investigative stories, not just daily coverage
- Translate complex financial and legal topics into accessible journalism
Who You Are
- 2–6 years of reporting experience around politics, policy, or nonprofits.
- Strong interest in or experience covering money in politics, influence, or accountability
- Demonstrated ability to produce clean, accurate, and engaging stories on deadline and writng a lot.
- Comfortable working with data, documents, and public records
- Curious, skeptical, and persistent in pursuing difficult stories
Nice to Have
- Experience with campaign finance or lobbying databases
- Investigative reporting experience (FOIA/public records requests)
- Data skills (Excel, SQL, or similar tools)
- Experience covering state or national politics
Compensation
- Salary range: $6000 to $9000 a month
- Benefits: health and paid time off, if position becomes permanent
