Description:

Block Club Chicago, a nonprofit news organization focused on Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods, is looking for a full-time general assignment reporter.

While most of our reporters are embedded in a geographic beat, our general assignment reporter is tasked with writing daily stories across the city, covering breaking news as it happens and developing enterprise stories and features about the city and its residents. 

This role is ideal for someone who is flexible, is able to manage their time well and can thrive in an environment where the news and priorities can quickly change.

You’ll love the job if you’re naturally curious and comfortable working on a deadline.

This is a remote position (we want you to be embedded in the community), but we’ll have staff meetings in our Loop office and you’ll check in with your editor several times a day. You’ll be asked to cover news events across the city in person, meaning you might be in Roseland one day, Rogers Park the next and working from home another day.

This is not a job for someone who wants to write one story a week. You’ll be expected to have one or two fresh stories daily. There will be opportunities to work on longer-form pieces and investigative stories, but the majority of the job is keeping readers up to date on daily news from the neighborhoods.

Requirements

Familiarity with Chicago

At least two years of reporting experience — please include news clips and not marketing or copywriting samples

Experience covering breaking news

Ability to shoot your own photos in the field

Experience promoting your stories on social media

Ability to generate story ideas and willingness to hear from neighbors and readers

Experience covering community meetings or a neighborhood beat

This position offers a salary range of $60k-$70k, commensurate with experience
