Description:

Breaking News/General Assignment Reporter-Missoula, MT

Do you have a strong news sense? Do you like the rush of covering breaking news? Are you curious about everything, and not afraid to chase a story and ask tough questions? If so, the Missoulian is looking for a breaking news/general assignment reporter who’s eager, sharp and ready to jump in.

What does the job entail?

This role is ideal for a journalist who thrives on fast-moving news but also loves digging into the everyday stories that define a community. When news breaks, you’ll be the first person on scene, ready to provide readers with need-to-know details and follow through afterward with any developments. You’ll also tackle a mix of general assignments and enterprise reporting for Missoula and the surrounding region, including the Bitterroot Valley, where our sister paper is based.

No two days will look exactly the same. You might be chasing breaking news, filing quick and clean updates, or turning a developing situation into a well-reported story that provides readers with depth, context and impact. Coverage will span a wide range of topics, including public safety, courts, education, business, arts, and health care. While the Missoulian has dedicated beat reporters, there’s always more news than can fit neatly into beats. Assignments are driven by where the biggest coverage needs are on a given day or week. You’ll work closely with editors, photographers, and fellow reporters, balancing speed with accuracy and always keeping strong journalism at the center of the work.

We are a digital-forward newsroom. While prior experience with SEO, web headline writing, analytics, or video is not required, a curiosity and willingness to learn are essential. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, eager to take initiative, and collaborative by nature — someone who contributes positively to a team-oriented newsroom that relies on trust, communication, and shared responsibility to cover the news well.

Why Missoula?

Missoula offers a rare mix of natural beauty, creative energy, and small-city buzz that’s hard to beat. Mountains and trailheads surround the area and a river quite literally runs through the downtown corridor. Missoula is a place where you can cover a news event in the afternoon and be hiking, skiing, floating the Clark Fork, or trail running before dinner.

Beyond the scenery, you'll get to help cover Missoula's thriving dining and arts scene that consistently punches above its weight. From independent coffee shops and local breweries to chef-driven restaurants, live music, theater, film, and a strong literary community, there’s always something happening. The city is home to a major university, an engaged public, and a strong sense of place and community.
