Summary:

GrowthSpotter has an opening for a journalist to cover real estate and development in Orange and Seminole counties, the two most populous counties in the Orlando market. The GrowthSpotter role is part of a three-person team that publishes an online newsletter with original content each weekday.

The Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA is one of the fastest-growing and top job-producing markets in the nation. This beat includes development in and around the Disney theme parks and International Drive tourism corridor, as well as the markets in Winter Park, Winter Garden (Horizon West), Apopka, and Oviedo.


What you will do:

  • Strive for speed and accuracy: Always providing readers with what we know, when we know it, while being transparent about sources of information

  • Employ creativity daily to conceive of stories, produce or secure visuals, get sources to cooperate, corroborate facts, and present information to readers in a relevant, interesting way

  • Maximize audience engagement with the site through various storytelling formats, including photo galleries, aggregation, and a variety of layouts

  • Create news and feature content that is strong on grammar, punctuation, clarity, and accuracy

  • Work with data and visuals teams, as appropriate, to deepen reporting and produce data visualization content items


What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Must have three years of daily newspaper experience (or equivalent at a digital news operation). Experience as a business, real estate, or local government reporter is preferred

  • Knowledge of libel laws and adherence to the Tribune's and Editorial's codes of ethics

  • Capacity to work independently when required, while simultaneously operating efficiently within a team dynamic

  • Up-to-date skills on various digital platforms, computer-assisted reporting techniques, and basic knowledge of SEO

  • Social media proficiency: Knowledge of Facebook, LinkedIn, and other platforms with the ability to develop and follow best practices
