Description:

Complete your education with a one-year fellowship.

Accepting applications from aspiring storytellers interested in advancing their journalism education with a yearlong renewable fellowship in accountability community journalism.

You’ll have freedom to develop showcase clips of hyperlocal, human-focused, enterprising features and investigations while advancing your skills in an up-close and personal environment of traditional print journalism with expert coaching.

Last year’s recipient, now working at a major national magazine in New York City, won multiple statewide awards and compares the fellowship to a master’s in journalism.

Located at the weekly Marion County Record  in east-central Kansas, the fellowship carries an annual salary of $35,000 plus a relocation stipend of up to $2,000, funded in part by proceeds from stipulated judgments in an illegal 2023 police raid of the Record’s newsroom and two homes.

Experience journalism as a vital component of vibrant democracy at a news organization featured in the Sundance documentary “Seized” and that has won such awards as the Don Bolles Medal from IRE, the William Allen White Foundation National Citation, the Free Speech Award from the Tully Center at Syracuse University, the Maria Ressa Prize from the University of Maryland, a Citation of Courage from RTNDA, the Tom and Pat Gish Award from the Institute of Rural Journalism, the Victor Murdock Award for investigative reporting, the Chairman’s Award from the National Newspaper Association, and the Eugene Cervi Award from the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors.

To apply, send a cover letter, resume, and five samples of your work to editor and publisher Eric Meyer at job@mnks.us. The fellowship is likely to begin on or about June 1.
