The Port Townsend Leader is seeking an enthusiastic journalist to get outside our city limits and tell the stories of our dynamic county. From agriculture to tourism to maritime trades and environmental issues, Jefferson County has no shortage of stories to tell for a reporter who is willing to dig.
We want a reporter who can follow complex stories and humanize them, reporting from the perspectives of the people affected most.
Strong candidates are capable of producing a high volume of stories, while seeking efficiencies that free them to focus on high-quality, deeply-reported journalism.
Essential skills
- An ability to interview sources and analyze data, then write stories that our readers can understand and relate to.
- Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment and an ability to see the story that is going to matter to readers.
- Ability to shoot photos.
- Familiarity with public records requests.
- Beat management and networking.
Expectations
- Shoe leather reporting. We want this reporter out of the office, talking to people and writing lots of stories.
- Produce compelling images.
- Build source networks within the reporter's coverage areas to generate a steady stream of story ideas.
Requirements
- A college degree in journalism or equivalent experience.
- 5 years of general news reporting and/or editing experience.
- The ability to work flexible hours is essential. This position may require some evening or weekend work to cover local events.
- Must have reliable transportation. Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance required.
