Position Overview
The Bulletin is seeking a curious, driven, and versatile reporter to join our newsroom. This role covers a wide range of stories across Central Oregon — from breaking news and public meetings to community features and investigative pieces. You'll report for both our print and digital platforms, serving a community that is growing rapidly and deserves quality, accountable journalism.
Responsibilities
- Report, write, and file timely and accurate stories on a wide range of topics including local government, public safety, business and community affairs.
- Attend and cover public meetings, press conferences, and community events
- Develop and maintain a network of sources across Deschutes, Crook, and Jefferson counties
- Produce content for both print and digital publication, including breaking news updates
- Shoot photos and video to accompany stories when needed
- Engage with readers on social media and contribute to the paper's digital presence
- Collaborate with editors and fellow reporters to identify and prioritize stories of community importance
- Meet daily and weekly deadlines consistently
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- At least 1–2 years of reporting experience (internships considered)
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills
- Familiarity with AP Style
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments simultaneously
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn Central Oregon communities, issues, and geography
- Experience with digital publishing tools and social media platforms
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Preferred
- Experience covering local government or public agencies
- Photography or videography skills
- Familiarity with public records requests and open meetings laws in Oregon
Compensation & Benefits
Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits package includes health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plan options. This is a union position covered under the Central Oregon NewsGuild.
