Description:
WITF’s News Director will shape the future of our
newsroom while delivering impactful, audience-focused journalism on broadcast,
digital and live platforms across the 19 counties we serve in Central Pa, and
beyond.
We are seeking a dynamic leader who embraces high-impact storytelling, enjoys team building, and thrives on real-time decision-making. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who has experience leading the creation of great journalism and knows that it isn’t just about what you report, but how and where you deliver it to your community.
What You’ll Do:
Editorial Leadership & Coaching
- Oversee the editorial focus of the newsroom, demonstrating curiosity and respect for diverse story opportunities across south-central Pennsylvania.
- Coach and mentor journalists, fostering professional growth and development.
- Edit radio and web stories daily, ensuring consistency, clarity, accuracy, and adherence to ethical and technical standards.
- Develop and execute coverage plans for developing and breaking news.
- Lead reporting projects, including podcasts and series, from conception through execution with a collaborative, team-centered approach.
Content Production & Distribution
- Participate in rotating production shifts, including evenings and weekends.
- Collaborate with the Program Manager and Creative Director to execute a multi-platform content distribution strategy (broadcast, digital, podcast, social).
- Support reporters in pitching and producing stories for regional and national outlets; maintain relationships with relevant editors and producers.
- Coordinate strategy with statewide public media partners.
- Collaborate with current statewide media partners while building and enhancing new relationships.
Community Engagement & Organizational Support
- Build and strengthen relationships by serving as a visible representative of the organization, engaging diverse audiences across digital platforms, community events, public forums, and organizational meetings.
- Act as a trusted voice during live events, confidently delivering information both on-air and in writing in fast-moving situations
- Represent the organization during on-air and in-person fundraising and development activities
- Support grant writing and reporting as needed.
- Serve as a substitute anchor for Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
- Manage freelancers and interns.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of three years of team management and editorial experience with experience leading in a changing environment.
- A proven track record with both writing stories and leading people.
- At least six years of newsroom experience, with proven newsgathering skills and deep knowledge of journalism ethics and practices.
- Excellent time-management abilities.
- Demonstrated commitment to lifting up new voices and meeting underserved communities where they’re at.
Preferred Qualification
- Strong understanding of the mission-based work of public media.
- On-air radio experience.
- Knowledge of topics affecting Pennsylvanians.
- Experience with cross-organization content collaboration.
- Ability to use metrics and analytics in editorial decision-making.
