Reporter Position
For more than a century, the Devils Lake Journal has served the Lake Region community with journalism that examines and celebrates this unique space in the Dakotas. Now a part of MCM Media, whose publications have an equally rich history of serving their communities for well over 100 years, providing news and a voice for the people, the Journal is looking for a new reporter to help move this paper forward.
If you have a passion for writing and journalism, then this is the position for you. As a reporter for the Journal, you will be expected to report, write and take photos with your stories, rewrite and edit press releases, and work with remote teams on digital and print publication. You'll be developing informative and engaging content for our audiences while collaborating with editors and other team members for storytelling across various media formats. You'll also be fact-checking details to maintain integrity, credibility and journalistic standards. We are willing and able to to work with you, to mentor you, and help with training you to succeed in these areas of expertise.
Located about 90 miles west of Grand Forks and known for its role as a trade center for the surrounding agricultural region, as well as for its proximity to the large lake that bears the same name, Devils Lake, N.D. is a city of about 7,000 residents and the county seat of Ramsey County. The nearby reservation of Spirit Lake Nation has almost as many inhabitants. The closest metropolitan cities to Devils Lake are Fargo, N.D. and Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada - each about three hours away.
The people in the Lake Region love their hometown sports. There is also a bustling local business community, centered on agriculture and recreation around the largest natural lake in North Dakota and the second-largest body of water in the state after the manmade Lake Sakakawea. The lake is well known for its fishing and other watersports and has been named the perch capital of the world.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Research, investigate and report on current events, breaking news and feature stories with accuracy and transparency.
Cover public meetings, court sessions and investigative reporting.
Write clear and engaging articles utilizing AP style standards to ensure consistency and professionalism
Conduct interviews with witnesses, experts, news sources and members of the community to collect first-hand details
Establish and grow strong relationships within the community
Develop content utilizing the strong relationships you build
Make suggestions for content to be featured in the paper
Take photos for visual enhancement and storytelling
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent experience
Strong newswriting and reporting skills
Ability to meet and manage deadlines
Strong diligence for grammar, AP style, and fact-checking
Reliable transportation, a valid driver's license and the minimum liability insurance required by state law
