Job Description: Tech/Politics Reporter
Reports to
Executive Editor
Position Summary
Mission Local is seeking to hire an ambitious tech reporter focused on tech, politics and power. This will be a new beat for Mission Local. It will be framed by our earlier work documenting money, power and politics in San Francisco, with a larger focus on tech’s role in shaping city, regional, and at times state and national politics.
You will help establish Mission Local as a go-to source for those interested in how tech executives and tech workers wield power in San Francisco and the Bay Area, and across the country. You will report on elections, the ties between San Francisco City Hall and tech executives, and the ideologies underpinning Silicon Valley politics.
The ideal candidate is experienced, loves digging, data and has experience in both shorter and longer investigative pieces — a multitasker able to balance dailies with enterprise stories.
Core Responsibilities
Covering and establishing the new tech beat at Mission Local.
Producing quick turnarounds as well as deeper dives.
Developing sources within San Francisco political circles, Silicon Valley tech companies, and experts in tech regulation, campaign finance, and all subjects related to tech power and politics.
Qualifications
5+ years in a newsroom, with at least five years of full-time experience.
A strong track record of publishing compelling short, medium and long-form stories.
The ability to think deeply about journalistic projects.
Facility with public records requests, campaign finance, and financial records, or an ability to quickly learn how to obtain and use these documents.
Enthusiasm for thinking and working creatively and collaboratively with journalists.
Excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication.
Ability and a keen interest in developing young reporters who may work with you on some projects.
There are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who possess important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. We also encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
