Description:

City Editor-Butte, MT

Do you want to join a newsroom that prioritizes accountability reporting in one of Montana’s most vibrant and unique cities? The Montana Standard in Butte is on the hunt for a City Editor who can help us tackle an ambitious list of stories that is as intriguing as the community we cover.

You won’t be building a newsroom from scratch but rather joining a team that boasts decades of experience. The Standard reporters understand their community inside and out, backwards and forward - they’ll bring the solid work, you’ll make sure it gets the attention it deserves.

This position is scheduled to work Tuesday-Saturday.

What you’ll do

As City Editor, you’ll be equal parts coach and teammate. You’ll contribute to important editorial decisions but will also be expected to dust off your writing fingers on a regular basis. This position is perfect for a jack-of-all-trades journalist who is eager to take on some leadership duties but still has a reporting itch to scratch.

On the digital front, you’ll help decide when and how stories are posted online, which multimedia elements will make them sing and how they appear in social media posts and email newsletters. We are a digital-forward newsroom, so while experience with things like SEO and web headline writing is preferred, it’s not a requirement. A willingness to learn the ropes, however, is necessary.

For print, you’ll help balance the story budget, proof pages and communicate with designers, among other duties. You’ll have a hand in making centerpieces shine and deciding what pieces get A1 play.

You’ll report to a managing editor that divides his time between the Montana Standard and the Helena Independent Record. The City Editor will also collaborate with a Helena-based multimedia editor on best practices for online storytelling.

Why you’ll love Butte

We call it Butte, America for a reason - the city carries a historical status of once being one of the most influential industrial boom towns in the country. Remnants of past eras are seeped into the city’s rolling hills and brick buildings. Community spirit runs deep here; it’s a tough town built by tough people.

Situated on the Continental Divide, you’ll find countless outdoor recreation opportunities right out your back door. From hiking and biking to fishing and skiing, there is no shortage of wilderness areas to explore in and around Butte.
