Compensation: $400–$500 per feature
Assignment Volume: 1–3 assignments (immediate start)

The Washington Diplomat, an established print and digital publication covering the international community in Washington, D.C., is seeking an experienced freelance feature writer to contribute to its Embassy Directory publication.

This opportunity is ideal for a journalist with strong long-form storytelling skills, a background in feature writing, and the ability to conduct in-depth, in-person interviews with diplomats, government officials, and cultural figures.

Key Responsibilities

• Report and write high-quality feature stories (1,000–2,000 words) for the Embassy Directory
• Conduct in-person interviews with foreign diplomats, U.S. officials, and relevant stakeholders
• Develop and cultivate sources within diplomatic, political, and cultural communities
• Deliver clean, engaging copy on deadline with minimal editorial revision

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of professional journalism experience, preferably in magazines or long-form features
• Demonstrated interest in international affairs, diplomacy, public policy, and global culture
• Strong interviewing, reporting, and narrative writing skills
• Familiarity with Washington, D.C.’s diplomatic and cultural landscape
• Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines

Additional Preferences

• Experience covering arts, culture, or international communities
• Prior work involving government or diplomatic sources

Compensation

• $400–$500 per completed feature, depending on scope and experience
