Description: The San Antonio Express-News is adding a position and looking for a video journalist with a high proficiency in shooting and editing video as well as still photography across a wide variety of subject matter.

We are specifically looking for:

-Visual journalist capable of producing cinematic, moment driven content that does not rely on talking heads to tell a story.

-Willingness to travel and work odd hours to capture great footage and the vision to succeed

-High proficiency in the Adobe video editing suite and able to edit videos efficiently and quickly

-FAA drone license

-Enterprising, ability to develop stories and find subjects on their own

-Someone who’s socially curious and willing to explore and connect with a wide swath of our community in and around South-Central Texas

-Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish will be prioritized

-Understanding on effective use of social media for branding and promotion of their work

-Ability to switch to still images when the need arises

The Express-News is known for their documentary focus and we are looking to expand on video storytelling and seek new, creative methods of connecting with viewers online by highlighting our amazing community and region.

While we are a local paper, the Express-News covers much of South-Central Texas, from SpaceX on the coast, wineries in the Hill Country to the North, and to the far West in places like the Permian Basin and Big Bend National Park.  We are home to the San Antonio Spurs as well as many minor league teams.  We are one of the fastest-growing, most interesting regions in the country. Visual opportunities are plentiful and we are often at the center of National stories from politics, immigration, and climate to trade and the space race.

San Antonio itself is a modern, affordable, culturally diverse city that still has that home town feel with a European charm and a wide array of activities both indoor and out.

The Express-News also partners with sister papers, the Austin American-Statesman, Dallas Morning News and Houston Chronicle. Our partnership with the team of great photojournalists in Austin is being augmented with a hands-on deputy director in both locations along with a regional director of visuals to oversee both departments.  Our emphasis is on quality documentary video and still photojournalism while also exploring new avenues of visual storytelling to drive audience and subscriptions.

The Express-News photo staff was a 2014 Pulitzer finalist for their work on immigration, and our staff has continued to win national-level awards year after year. The photo editing team came in fourth in NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism 2024. We operate as a digital first, major metro daily newspaper and maintain a very high standard of work across all subject matter.

The staff uses Canon mirrorless equipment with all prime glass, a DJI Mavic 4 Pro drone, portable lighting gear, Mac laptops with Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Photomechanic and more.  Proficiency with those programs is a must along with a reliable car or truck and the ability to work and transmit while in the field. We are seeking a true journalist who can hunt down compelling stories while working with a team of talented photographers, writers, and editors.  Much of the work will be in video with stills as a secondary requirement

The ability to connect to a broad swath of the community is a must as well as documenting emotionally difficult stories as they arise. We are no stranger to challenging stories, from the mass shooting in Uvalde to the recent floods in Kerr County which killed over 100 people. While those events are few and far between, we do focus on news which has the community’s interest.

Pay will be based on your work experience in the newspaper industry as well as your skillset.  While we envision this as a position for someone with experience, we will consider recent graduates who have an exceptionally strong portfolio.  If you are interested in the position, please send a short cover letter, resume and a link to an online portfolio featuring your video work.  Send the above to Mr. Michel Fortier, Regional Director of Visuals, mfortier@express-news.net.
