This role is ideal for a journalist or editor who wants to transition into program leadership while staying closely connected to impactful environmental journalism.

About the CEJ: The CEJ, housed in the Department of Journalism in the College of Communication, Media, Design and Information at the University of Colorado Boulder, focuses on the professional development of working journalists, student education, and research on media, environment and society. Founded in 1992 and located in the heart of Boulder, the CEJ works to elevate journalistic coverage of environmental issues and strengthen public communication about the environment. Together with other programs, the CEJ manages and operates the Ted Scripps Fellowship, a nationally recognized fellowship program on environmental journalism.

In this role, the successful candidate will be expected to curate an amazing experience for each annual cohort of Scripps fellows. While maintaining a significant footprint in professional journalism (20% of the job is doing journalism), the assistant director will serve, along the CEJ director, as the intellectual leader of the fellowship program and an ambassador for environmental journalism everywhere.

Responsibilities:

You will work closely with the CEJ Director to lead the Ted Scripps Fellowship program, including:

·      Recruit and select a diverse and talented cohort of fellows

·      Guide fellows through onboarding and serve as a trusted point of contact throughout the year

·      Help fellows connect with campus experts, courses, and research resources

·      Advise fellows on their projects, education and professional development

·      Organize seminars and workshops with scientists and policy experts

·      Coordinate field trips and immersive learning experiences

·      Increase the program’s national and local reach

·      Work with the advisory board, partner, and alumni

·      Oversee the day-to-day operations of the fellowship programs including budget and resource management.

Besides the fellowship, you will also work with the CEJ Director to lead the CEJ areas of work, including:

·      Build and maintain networks with other centers, institutes, university, college, department, and alumni

·      Implement the CEJ’s communication strategies

·      Coordinate the CEJ public events (e.g., panel discussions, public lectures)

·      Design programs to engage student journalists in the center’s activities

·      Work with CEJ director to propose new programs to expand the CEJ work.

You are also expected to:

·      Conduct your own professional journalistic work on environmental and science topics, such as reporting and researching towards publication in recognized media outlets

Qualifications:

We are especially interested in candidates who have:

·      Bachelor’s degree

·      At least five years of experience as a journalist or editor
