Director of Audience Engagement
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Gazette News Group is looking for a dynamic director of audience engagement to lead our team in New York. You will work at the center of our newsroom to help us accomplish our most important work: connecting audiences with our reporting. The right candidate will guide the company’s digital growth by amplifying our local reporting, and developing a sophisticated, data-informed strategy for increasing audience across all digital platforms.
You will lead a talented team that collaborates and communicates with journalists throughout all our newsrooms to help shape the best news coverage in the Capital Region and beyond.
Responsibilities include directing coverage of breaking news, creating digital-only content, ensuring the team is writing engaging headlines, crafting social media posts, monitoring news, refining our newsletter strategy, and keeping up-to-date on the latest news and trends.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Develop a data-informed strategy for increasing audience across all digital platforms.
Guide and coach your team and other staff in executing our growth plan.
Oversee The Gazette’s homepages, promoting and spotlighting a variety of stories from all sections throughout the day.
Work across platforms to engage readers, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, newsletters, news alerts and more. Be aware of and consider emerging platforms.
Write story headlines, story summaries and cutlines with audiences in mind.
Leverage data and analytics tools to determine effectiveness and make improvements.
Be a newsroom leader for best practices on digital, social media and audience strategy.
Monitor news feeds for breaking news.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Strong news judgment, and the ability to make quick decisions.
Headline writing skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
An ability to work in a friendly, collaborative culture while also being able to quickly respond to urgent news.
The Gazette News Group is a locally-owned, growing media organization with newsrooms in the Hudson Valley, Capital Region, Lake Placid and more. This role will report to the Vice President of Content and is based in Schenectady, NY (though we are a hybrid workplace). Salary range is $75,000 to $90,000, depending on experience.
