Description:

 University of Nebraska Sports Reporter

The Omaha World-Herald seeks an ambitious, innovative digital content creator to cover University of Nebraska athletics with a focus on the school’s hugely popular and influential volleyball program.

This is one of the signature beats for our nationally recognized sports staff, and one of the signature roles in our newsroom. Husker volleyball is a force in Nebraska on and off the court, with a team that contends for national titles, sells out its arena, and recently packed 92,003 fans in Memorial Stadium for the most-attended women’s sports event in history.

Yes, the team’s that good, and fans love it that much. Volleyball is one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports. There’s no slowing down the interest, and we want our coverage to reflect fans’ voracious appetite.

The ideal candidate will have:

·         At least three years of reporting experience on a major sports beat

·         A proven track record as a news-breaker in a competitive market

·         A proven track record delivering a high volume of high-quality coverage

·         A proven track record of engaging with fans and readers on social media and in public

·         Comfort talking in front of a microphone or camera in various capacities

·         Comfort working with digital audience metrics

·         An upbeat approach to growing The World-Herald’s reach and strengthening its engagement with subscribers

·         A relentless desire to innovate, experiment, and help chart the newsroom’s next phase of digital growth

This reporter will have opportunities to contribute to Husker coverage on football, basketball, and softball, among other sports, and opportunities to contribute to the newsroom in other ways. If you’re an innovator with a hunger to learn, grow, and perform in one of the best college sports markets in the country, this job might be for you.

To apply, attach a resume and cover letter addressed to Sports Editor Sam McKewon. Include five to seven writing samples along with a few examples of your best video or podcast work.
