Founded in 2021, the paper has quickly become a trusted source for deeply reported local journalism, with particular strength in local government accountability, education, the environment, arts and culture, and community life.
As the organization enters its next phase of growth, we are adding an Audience Engagement Manager to our development operations. The job is an hourly/contractor position with the potential to become full-time, salaried at some point in the future.
Position Overview
The Audience Engagement Manager will play a key role in building and sustaining our relationship with our readers, subscribers and donors. This position focuses on two core areas:

Donor Management – strengthening connections with donors and converting non-donors into supporters.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of journalism, digital marketing and customer relationship management.

Create and execute re‑engagement campaigns to reduce subscriber churn.
Collaborate with editorial staff to align reader engagement initiatives with newsroom content.
Test and refine messaging to grow newsletter engagement and site traffic.
Donor Management
Develop and manage strategies for acquiring, retaining, upgrading and engaging individual donors giving under $5,000 annually.
Coordinate and support communications and engagement activities for donors at all levels and assist with prospect research needs.
Manage recurring-donor programs, ensuring timely communication, acknowledgment and stewardship.
Track giving trends and donor lifecycle data to guide strategy during annual and seasonal fundraising campaigns.
Support donor communication materials such as thank‑you emails, appeals, and progress updates.
Conduct regular data hygiene processes, such as audits and updates.
Develop and implement data protocols, which will be used to generate regular reports, segmentation lists, and analytics on donor trends.
Track and analyze KPIs, including donor growth, retention, and gift levels, to inform strategic decisions

2–4 years of experience in targeted marketing, audience development or fundraising, preferably in a nonprofit or media setting.
Proficiency with CRM software such as HubSpot, Salesforce or similar engagement tools.
Strong skills in data analysis, segmentation, and list management.
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple concurrent campaigns.
Clear, personable writing style suitable for emails, newsletters and donor communications.
Experience with digital analytics or audience research is a plus.
