The Missouri School of Journalism invites applications for the SABEW Endowed Missouri Chair in Business and Financial Journalism. This prestigious endowed position, supported by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) and matching funds from the State of Missouri, is dedicated to advancing the teaching, research, and practice of business and financial journalism at the highest level.

The Chair will play a leading role in shaping the future of business journalism education. The SABEW Chair will lead a program with international impact on the practice and understanding of business journalism. The Chair is charged with building strong and innovative programs through teaching, news outlet engagement, research, professional partnerships, and outreach.

At the heart of this chair is the opportunity to teach and mentor students in business and financial journalism, through the Missouri Method of hands-on learning in our news outlets and classrooms. The right candidate for this role will engage with our news outlet leaders and students to build and conduct innovative business reporting across platforms. They will integrate the Bloomberg Terminal and other business technology into their teaching, research and engagement at the School. The successful candidate will understand that our students learn by doing. This work is conducted across the community-facing Missouri News Network, which includes the Columbia Missourian, KBIA-FM (NPR), Missouri Business Alert, Vox city magazine, KOMU-8 (NBC), statehouse reporting program, and the Boone County Journal. This position will actively engage with news outlet leaders and students to move our cross-platform coverage forward with a focus on training the next generation of journalists and serving communities across Missouri and beyond. The SABEW Chair will also use the resources of the chair to build a national presence as a leader in the field while working with industry leaders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in business and financial journalism, with a focus on the evolving landscape of the field.
  • Collaborate with faculty and students to elevate business and financial journalism in the School's community-facing news outlets, fostering innovation and excellence in public service reporting.
  • Develop and offer courses, workshops, and conferences for business journalists, including events in cooperation with SABEW.
  • Mentor students and support graduate research, fostering the next generation of business journalists.
  • Support and advance the programming and services of SABEW to foster its ability to serve the needs of business journalists.
  • Collaborate with the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) at the School to share successes and evolving business/financial journalism coverage approaches and opportunities with the industry.

    Appointment Details

  • 12-month appointment at the rank of Associate of Full Professional Practice Professor (NTT)
  • Salary and benefits are competitive and include support for research, travel, and program development, as provided by the endowment.

    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in journalism or related field of study
  • Ten years of relevant professional experience

    Candidates will be evaluated on:

  • Significant professional experience and achievement in business and/or financial journalism, with a national or international reputation for excellence.
  • Distinguished record as a journalist or scholar, with credentials qualifying for appointment as a full professor with tenure or as a professional practice professor.
  • Demonstrated leadership, innovation, and commitment to advancing the field.
  • Experience in teaching, training, or mentoring journalists is strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced degree in journalism, communications, business, or a related field is preferred but not required for candidates with exceptional professional credentials.
  • Ability to collaborate with others on use of artificial intelligence in business/financial journalism.

    Position Details

    Anticipated Salary Range: $120,000-$145,000

    Through its long history of excellence in journalism education, the J-School has graduated dedicated alumni who work at leading news organizations around the world, as well as in smaller community news outlets throughout the nation. The School prides itself on its home community, which includes approximately 75 faculty, 1,700 undergraduate students, 150 graduate students. The student body includes individuals from many countries across the world.
