Description:
Raw America, the fastest-growing reader-funded independent news channel, is seeking a fearless Capitol Hill reporter to interview politicians and cover hearings on the Hill. Created by the founders of Raw Story and Really American, Raw America is a large Substack and YouTube brand building the progressive media infrastructure democracy desperately needs.
We're looking for someone with personality who can think and record on their feet and will go the extra mile to get the story. If you believe in holding power accountable, and you're fed up with access journalism and corporate stenography, this role is for you.
Reporting directly to Raw America leadership, you'll be responsible for:
On-the-ground Capitol Hill reporting - Breaking stories and interviews that expose corruption, connecting dots others miss, and delivering real-time coverage of Congressional developments that matter to our progressive audience
Video-first storytelling - Creating compelling YouTube content, livestreams, and social media videos that cut through political spin and deliver unvarnished truth
Source development - Building relationships with lawmakers, staffers, whistleblowers, and activists who can provide insight into what's really happening behind closed doors
Breaking news coverage - Rapid response reporting on developing political stories, with ability to go live and provide immediate analysis
Out of session research - Digging into voting records, financial disclosures, lobbying connections, and other public records to expose hypocrisy and corruption when Congress isn’t in session and original video is hard to obtain
Cross-platform content - Ability to write a weekly column, creating social media content, and collaborating with our video team including British Chris and other Raw America contributors
Event coverage - Attending hearings, press conferences, protests, and other political events to capture footage and interviews
Required Skills:
Aggressive news judgment - Ability to spot the real story beneath political theater and craft headlines that break through the noise
Video storytelling expertise - Understanding of what makes compelling digital content that drives engagement and shares
Political sophistication - Deep knowledge of how Congress actually works and who the key players are
Fearless interviewing - Comfortable confronting politicians with tough questions and following up when they dodge
Digital native - Understanding of YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, and other platforms where political conversations happen
Multi-platform production - Ability to shoot, edit, and publish content quickly across multiple formats
Requirements:
3-5 years political reporting experience (Hill experience strongly preferred)
Demonstrated track record of breaking political stories
Experience with video production and live streaming (ability to edit in Adobe Premiere, Final Cut and/or Adobe Creative Suite is highly valued but not required, please indicate your level of editing experience on your cover letter)
Ability to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends
Washington D.C.-area residence
