As a reporter for The Times-Standard, you'll have the opportunity to investigate and report on a wide range of topics on local news and city council meetings. No two days will be the same as you hit the streets to uncover the latest developments in your community. We are situated on the beautiful North Coast of California and have a reputation for having a unique culture. Most work is done remotely, although there is access to our office and the nearly 175 years of our newspaper archive.
What you will do:
Primary responsibility is producing at least two byline stories per day
Working cooperatively with our small team of journalists
Dig up and tell the stories of Humboldt County
Cover local news, including city council meetings, local events, press conferences, breaking news and ongoing court cases
Conduct interviews with sources using your incredible people skills
What you will bring:
AP style knowledge and the ability to quickly compile accurate reporting on a variety of topics
Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written required, including spelling and grammar skills
Working knowledge of covering court cases and navigating the legal system a plus
Technical ability with PC laptops, digital cameras, and recording equipment, WordPress a plus
Bachelor's degree preferred; experience in a professional journalism newsroom preferred
Benefits and Compensation:
The hourly wage range is $16.90 - $17.25 + cell phone stipend and mileage reimbursement. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
