Reports to: Alaska Desk Managing Editor
Alaska Public Media is hiring a reporter for its statewide reporting initiative called the Alaska Desk, funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. This initiative is aimed at enhancing the public radio network’s statewide coverage by addressing news deserts and increasing collaboration across more than a dozen stations.
The Alaska Desk is staffed by four reporters and three editors with a statewide focus. This is a temporary position funded through Sept. 30, 2026.
Our ideal reporter candidate is eager to dive into complex and high stakes issues that matter the most to Alaskans in the Aleutians and the state from climate change to the housing shortage to the future of Alaska’s economy. This reporter will work closely with The Alaska Desk team to ensure our reporting is deep, thorough and reflects the diversity of the state. The Alaska Desk reporter will join the award-winning team at Alaska Public Media and be based at KUCB in Unalaska, KSDP in Sand Point or KUHB in St. Paul.
Applicants will be expected to provide:
- A resume.
- A cover letter that addresses the candidate’s work experience as it relates to all required and preferred qualifications.
- Up to three stories you reported, along with a few sentences explaining the backstory of each piece.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Continually generate quality story ideas that go beyond press releases and meeting agendas and delve deep into high stakes and engaging issues that will help determine the future of our community and state.
- Be well read on Alaska issues, and ready to identify trends across Alaska communities to drive statewide story ideas.
- Be adept at listening to undercovered communities to help find stories that are important to Alaskans.
- Develop and maintain a network of diverse sources to ensure our reporting reflects all of the people who call the state home.
- Collaborate closely with the Alaska Desk editors and other reporters, as well as other public media colleagues, on daily reporting and longer-term projects.
- Report and produce accurate and precise stories for broadcast and digital on deadline, multiple times a week.
- Meet deadlines, abide by AP style and uphold professional journalistic standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required qualifications:
- Two years reporting experience.
- Ability to work in a team-based organization.
- Application of high journalistic standards and news judgment.
Preferred qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Skill in on-air radio and/or on-air TV reporting and audio production.
- A strong grasp of digital journalism, from writing quick and accurate breaking news to taking photographs.
- Familiarity with public radio and television news, and broadcast programming.

- Flexible, adaptable and proven ability to work in a deadline-driven environment.
- Must be able to occasionally work various hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
Compensation:
The salary for this position is $55,400.

Location:
This position is located at KUCB in Unalaska, KSDP in Sand Point or KUHB in St. Paul, with the option to work from home part of the time.

The work environment characteristics described here are typical of a television/radio broadcast office environment and representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
