Description:
The Newton Beacon, the three-year-old nonprofit news source for the city of Newton, Massachusetts, seeks an entrepreneurial journalist for multimedia reporting, covering news stories about Newton’s schools and a variety of other topics, who is passionate about fair, factual reporting with an intensive local focus.
About the Beacon: The Newton Beacon is an online-only news organization operated by the Newton News Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit, and guided by a board of directors and other volunteers. The Beacon serves a city of almost 90,000 residents just outside of Boston, and has more than 10,000 subscribers to its free, twice-a-week newsletter.
About the Responsibilities: The Reporter will join a full-time Editor/Lead Reporter and a team of professional contract and college reporters with volunteer columnists. Working with the Editor/Lead Reporter, the Reporter will identify newsworthy stories, conduct interviews and research, attend public meetings and events, and write three to five stories each week. The Reporter will generally, but not exclusively, report on Newton’s well-regarded public school system, area private schools, school leadership, school infrastructure and education policy that impacts Newton. In addition, the Reporter will cover other topics as assigned, take photos, create and edit short video and audio clips, and upload draft versions of stories within the Beacon’s website content management system. The reporter will spend significant time working in Newton, but the Beacon is a fully remote organization.
About the Candidate: The person hired will be an entrepreneurial journalist with experience in a local news organization and excited about countering the growth of local news deserts across the country. S/he will be comfortable operating independently and committed to nonpartisan, fair news reporting. Preference will be given to candidates with related news gathering and writing experience, conversant in Associated Press style and Wordpress. Skills with leveraging AI tools and reporting for video and audio a plus. Must provide her/his own transportation to events.
This position is full-time, with flexible hours that include evening and occasional weekend assignments, and provides healthcare insurance coverage. Salary: $51,000 to $56,000. To apply, please send a résumé, cover letter and links to examples of published work by March 6, 2026, to the attention of Burt Glass to info@newtonbeacon.org.
