Assistant Editor, Cascadia Daily News 

Cascadia Daily News, an award-winning, locally owned, 4-year-old digital/print news startup in Bellingham, WA, seeks a multi-skilled assistant editor/producer to manage copy flow from a team-oriented newsroom to a daily digital website and weekly print edition. 

The job: The CDN assistant editor works as a desk editor/producer, assisting other editors with story and image editing, formatting and posting content created by a fast-paced team of 15 full- and part-time journalists to CDN’s website and other platforms. 

Position details: Full time, benefits eligible, newsroom-based with some hybrid work allowed. Shifts will include evening and occasional night and weekend work. Requires residence in Whatcom or Skagit County, Washington.  

Reports to: Managing Editor, News 

Pay range: $58,000 to $63,000 annually, DOE 

Key duties: 

  • Copy editing news stories for structure, grammar, AP Style and clarity, on deadline. 
  • Formatting and posting stories, photos, graphics, video and other material on deadline to the website cascadiadaily.com. 
  • Assisting with daily maintenance and curation of CDN website and home page. 
  • Monitoring for, and occasionally reporting and writing, breaking news stories from various sources.  
  • Coordinating and dispatching reporters and photographers in breaking news situations. 
  • Assisting with adapting and planning daily news stories for use in CDN’s weekly print edition and other platforms. 
  • Obtaining and publishing non-deadline stories from other news sources and services. 
  • Assisting with assembling and scheduling news alerts and roundups via email newsletters and other delivery systems. 
  • Monitoring and maintaining newsroom master planning list when stories are scheduled/published. 
  • Regularly participating in weekly editor’s meeting, weekly staff meetings and other newsroom planning sessions. 
  • Helping to coordinate and oversee fellows and interns. 

 

Essential skills 

  • Keen editing skills with an eye not only for text errors but story gaps/framing issues, missing information. 
  • Intimate familiarity with Associated Press Style and in-house style guide exceptions. 
  • Strict attention to detail and fact-checking of news copy on tight deadlines in a digital-first newsroom working in a competitive news environment. 
  • Solid knack for dynamic headline writing, often multiple versions for same story on different platforms. 
  • Strong grounding in media ethics consistent with CDN’s brand and community mission. 
  • Ability and confidence to work independently and make news decisions alone or in collaborative fashion with other editors. 

 

Beneficial skills 

  • Basic photo-editing, page-layout experience. 
  • Ability to create, refine and publish simple maps and graphics. 
  • Familiarity with Slack, WordPress, Beehiiv, MS Office, Google docs and sheets, Outlook, other industry standard digital tools. 
  • Experience or familiarity with news issues in the Pacific Northwest region. 

 

Minimum requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field. 
  • Three years’ editing experience, preferably in a professional digital daily journalism environment.
