The Opportunity
OPB is seeking an experienced, creative, and forward-thinking Senior Developer, Front End & Design to join the digital product team. Not only will this person be the key player in building and maintaining the front end of OPB's owned & operated digital products, but they will be a thought partner in updating digital infrastructure. This individual will be a key player in collaborating with Digital Programming, Audience Engagement, Membership and Marketing to ensure that the visual and interactive standards of OPB's web and digital spaces are upholding OPB's strategic pillars.
This role is critical to OPB’s mission as a public service newsroom. As audiences increasingly rely on digital platforms for trusted journalism, the Senior Developer is essential to ensuring OPB remains an accessible, innovative, and user-friendly source of news and information. As with all roles, this individual will keep OPB's values and mission central to their work.
Position Details
The Senior Developer, Front-End & Design will serve as both a technical leader and our lead designer, playing a pivotal role in user experience and visual identity across OPB’s website, mobile and email platforms. This position combines advanced development responsibilities with design expertise to create seamless, accessible, and engaging digital experiences that align with OPB’s brand and mission. Reporting to the Director of Platform and Product and working within an agile, four-person product development team, this individual will contribute to both front-end and back-end projects while driving OPB’s digital design vision forward.
Areas of Responsibility
30% - Front-end development and technical design standards.
· Act as OPB’s primary technical resource for design, developing design systems and building consistent, accessible user interfaces that meet industry standards and align with OPB’s brand guidelines.
· Establish and maintain visual and interactive standards, collaborating closely with product managers, developers, and stakeholders to deliver polished, user-centric digital experiences.
· Lead improvements in technical performance, accessibility, and user experience, while actively managing and reducing technical debt.
25% - Cross-team collaboration and workflow management.
· Liaise with stakeholders, teams and developers to manage communication, oversee ticket workflows, and define clear technical design specifications.
· Contribute to documentation, process improvement, and internal tooling.
25% - Mentorship and best practice leadership.
· Provide mentorship and training to other developers, reviewing code and design deliverables, offering feedback, and promoting best practices in both development and UX/UI design.
15% - Building scalable testing frameworks to evaluate and iterate on design solutions.
· Partner with the team to lead usability testing.
Working Conditions
Hybrid/Remote anywhere in Oregon or Washington with occasional travel to OPB HQ in Portland. This position typically works 5 days per week, though some weekend/evening work is possible in case of emergency.

Minimum Position Requirements (Skills, Abilities, Attitudes)
· 4 years of experience in web development and design.
· Experience with project management, scheduling, and agile development practices.
· Fluent in HTML, CSS, web design, grid and flexbox layouts.
· Familiarity with JavaScript (ES6) and node.
· Familiarity with design software like Figma and Sketch.
· Experience with user-centered principles and visual hierarchy.
· Familiarity with working with an outside development firm.
· Experience with source repositories, writing robust tests, and code reviews.
· Design experience meeting web accessibility standards.
· Experience taking a product idea from concept through production.
Preferred (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Attitudes)
· 5 to 7 years of experience in web development and design.
· A collaborative team player.
· Enthusiasm for the mission of OPB.
· Experience running design sprints with cross-functional stakeholders.
· Experience with React and Jest.
· Knowledge of cloud platforms, especially Amazon Web Services.
· Familiarity with Python and Django.
· Familiarity with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and non-relational databases (MongoDB).
· Experience with developing data driven applications and design/visualization tools like D3, Plotly, or Vega-Lite.
Additional Information
· This position reports to the Director of Platform & Product, is unrepresented, and is eligible for benefits.
· The probably hiring range for this exempt, full time position is between $77,000-$89,000 depending on qualifications.
