Description:

Salinas Valley Now

Staff Writer

Salinas Valley Now is an expansion project from the journalists who bring you Monterey County Weekly and Monterey County Now. (Back-to-back winners of first place General Excellence at the 2024 and 2025 California Journalism Awards.) It will be a daily digital news platform dedicated exclusively to the stories emanating from Salinas and Salinas Valley, and will launch in the spring of 2026. We are seeking an experienced, bilingual journalist to join our team as a staff writer. The ideal candidate will have clips that show they are a dogged reporter, have a history of scoops and the demonstrated ability to keep their finger on the pulse of the community. Bilingual English and Spanish language skills are required; a familiarity with the communities of Salinas and Salinas Valley is a plus.

Must be able to exercise good judgment about the news of the day and respond well to feedback. Digital fluency and a minimum of three years of experience as a journalist (or equivalent) is required. This is a new project and the staff writer should be curious and adaptable as we try new things. The schedule includes working occasional nights and weekends, as needed.

The staff writer will join a company that currently hosts the largest newsroom in the market, and one where journalists are treated like human beings. This is a full-time position, not remote work, with a salary of $60,000/year (depending on experience). Compensation Includes a generous benefit package.

To apply, email your cover letter, resume and three writing samples to Editor Sara Rubin at sara@montereycountynow.com.
