Description:
The Idaho Press is seeking an accomplished Executive Editor to lead newsroom operations across our portfolio of publications and digital platforms. This role is responsible for setting editorial vision, ensuring journalistic excellence, and guiding the organization through the continued evolution of digital-first, community-centered journalism.
The Executive Editor is a strategic leader who understands the responsibility and impact of local journalism. This role balances high editorial standards with audience growth, operational discipline, and collaborative leadership across departments. The ideal candidate brings deep newsroom experience, strong people leadership, and a clear understanding of how modern audiences consume and engage with local news.
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Leadership & Strategy
• Set and execute the editorial vision for Idaho Press across print, digital, and social platforms
• Ensure consistent journalistic standards, ethics, accuracy, and AP style compliance
• Edit and oversee enterprise, investigative, and daily news coverage
• Guide coverage priorities to reflect community relevance, accountability, and impact
• Lead planning and execution of special sections, projects, and long-term editorial initiatives
Digital Strategy & Audience Growth
• Drive a digital-first publishing mindset across the newsroom
• Collaborate on audience engagement strategies including newsletters, social media, and web optimization
• Use analytics and audience data to inform content decisions and newsroom priorities
• Encourage innovation in storytelling formats including multimedia, video, and interactive content
• Partner with digital, product, and advertising teams to align editorial strategy with audience growth goals
Team Leadership & Development
• Lead, mentor, and develop editors, reporters, and contributors across the organization
• Foster a collaborative, accountable newsroom culture focused on growth and performance
• Recruit, onboard, and retain strong journalistic talent
• Support professional development with emphasis on leadership, digital skills, and community reporting
• Promote diversity of perspectives, voices, and coverage within the newsroom
Operations & Community Engagement
• Oversee daily newsroom operations and production workflows
• Collaborate with pagination, design, and production teams to ensure efficient execution
• Manage freelance budgets, contributor assignments, and editorial resources
• Serve as a visible, trusted representative of Idaho Press within the community
• Build and maintain relationships with public officials, community leaders, and readers
• Respond professionally to reader feedback, corrections, and community concerns
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communications, or related field
• 7+ years of newsroom experience, including senior editorial leadership
• Strong editing skills with mastery of AP style and journalistic standards
• Demonstrated experience leading teams in a deadline-driven environment
• Proven understanding of digital publishing platforms and newsroom workflows
• Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills
• Knowledge of media law, ethics, and public records
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience leading a multi-platform or multi-publication newsroom
• Strong understanding of SEO, analytics, and audience development tools
• Background in community or regional journalism
• Experience with enterprise reporting and long-term editorial projects
• Comfort working cross-functionally with advertising, marketing, and production teams
