Description:
About QCity Metro
QCity Metro is one of the nation’s digital pioneers in local Black news. Founded in 2008, we serve Charlotte’s Black communities with news, resources, and perspectives that are often overlooked by mainstream media. Our mission is to provide relevant content that informs, empowers, and entertains our audiences while documenting the thriving culture of the "QCity." As we continue to evolve, we are looking for a visionary leader to help us grow our reach and deepen our impact.
About the role
We are seeking a high-energy, strategic, and community-minded Editor to lead our newsroom. You won't just be moving commas; you will be the primary architect of our editorial voice.
You will be responsible for curating high-impact content, directing a team of reporters and freelancers, and managing our daily newsletter — the heartbeat of our connection with the community. We want someone who is "fail-fast" oriented, meaning you aren't afraid to experiment with new content formats, headlines, or story angles to see what resonates.
Key responsibilities:
Editorial Leadership: Direct reporters on story assignments, determining what we cover (and what we don't) to ensure we stay true to our mission.
Newsletter Curation: Produce and manage the daily newsletter, ensuring it is a "must-read" for Charlotte’s Black community.
Audience Growth: Use metrics and analytics to understand our audience personas and make data-driven decisions that grow our readership.
Vision & Innovation: Bring fresh ideas to the table. We want someone with a vision for the future of QCity Metro and the courage to try new ways of storytelling.
Quality Control: Ensure all content meets professional standards, adhering to AP Style and SEO best practices.
What we’re looking for:
The Experience: Proven background in reporting is preferred; previous editing experience is strongly preferred.
The Connection: A familiarity with the Charlotte area and a genuine passion for the issues and culture affecting Black Charlotteans.
The Background: Proficiency in Content Management Systems (CMS), AP Style, SEO, and newsletter-delivery systems.
The Analytical Mind: You should be comfortable using data (Google Analytics, newsletter metrics, etc.) to inform editorial strategy.
The Leader: You are a competent leader ready to mentor reporters and take ownership of a digital newsroom.
Personal Attributes:
You are a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, (non-micro-manged) environment
You have a “fail fast, learn fast” mentality
You are curious, empathetic and deeply invested in the growth of Black media.
You read. Constantly.
