Description:
Regional News Host & Producer
KVNF Mountain Grown Community Radio | Western Colorado
KVNF is seeking a Regional News Host, Producer, and Reporter to join our news team and help shape daily news for rural Western Colorado.
This position anchors and reports for KVNF’s weekday Regional Newscast and plays a central role in deciding what stories our listeners hear each day. It’s a job for someone who is curious about how communities work, eager to build strong local relationships, and comfortable making editorial decisions on a daily deadline.
KVNF serves a wide, rural region on Colorado’s Western Slope. Our listeners rely on us for clear, trustworthy reporting that reflects where they live and what matters to them. The Regional News Host and Producer is a key voice in delivering that service.
About the role
The Regional News Host and Producer fills a ten-minute weekday newscast with a mix of original, hyper-local reporting and carefully curated regional and statewide journalism. You’ll source stories from across KVNF’s listening area, work closely with partner news organizations (RMCR, CCNA, and MWNB), and bring it all together into a daily program that is timely, accurate, and grounded in community.
In addition to the daily newscast, this role produces KVNF’s weekly public affairs show, Local Motion, every other week, and contributes accompanying web and digital content.
This is a hands-on reporting and producing position. The person in this role exercises real editorial judgment, works independently, and collaborates closely with KVNF’s Program Director, staff, freelancers, and regional partners.
What you’ll do
- Host and produce KVNF’s weekday Regional Newscast.
- Identify and report original stories from communities across Western Colorado.
- Curate and edit content from regional and statewide public-media partners.
- Publish accompanying web and social content, including short audio promos tied to daily news coverage.
- Make daily editorial decisions about story selection and placement.
- Build and maintain relationships with community members, local officials, and organizations.
- Record and edit audio interviews, spots, wraps, and voicers.
- Breaking or emergency new coverage.
- Represent KVNF professionally in the community and on the air.
- Contribute to fundraising efforts and special coverage as needed.
Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for a journalist who is:
- Curious, observant, and engaged with community life.
- Comfortable being a consistent on-air voice.
- Confident making editorial decisions under deadline.
- Is familiar with public radio and NPR standards and ethics.
- Interested in rural and regional reporting.
- Organized, self-directed, and collaborative.
Experience in news production or a demonstrated equivalent is required. Public radio or nonprofit media experience is a plus, but not required.
Location and schedule
This position is based within KVNF’s broadcast area in Western Colorado. Applicants must live in, or plan to relocate to, the KVNF broadcast area.
The role is full-time. Some evening or weekend work is required. Every other week, in-person presence at KVNF’s Paonia studio is required. Studio space in Montrose is also available, and working from home is acceptable when not reporting or hosting live programming.
Compensation and benefits
- Annual salary: $38,000 – $47,000, depending on experience
10 paid holidays and generous, plus paid leave as follows:
- First year 10 days
- After one year 15 days
- After three years 20 days
- Health stipend
- Mileage reimbursement for reporting travel
- Field recording equipment and laptop provided
