The Journal is a growing nonprofit, nonpartisan news site published by the Kansas Leadership Center in Wichita, Kansas. It focuses on in-depth and solutions reporting about community issues. The full-time team includes an editor, staff reporter and an engagement manager. It works closely with experienced freelancers plus Wichita’s journalism collaborative and Documenters program. The Journal’s reporting, particularly its investigative work, has won honors from the Institute for Nonprofit News and the Kansas Press Association.

Position:

The 2026 election cycle is an especially consequential one for Kansas, with voters weighing in on a governor’s race, a U.S. Senate race and whether Kansas Supreme Court Justices will be elected or appointed by the governor. All amid changing voting laws. Using text reporting, as well as multimedia and engagement techniques, the civics reporter will make elections, voting and civic participation understandable and accessible for more Kansans, especially younger voters.

Salary and Benefits: $40,000-$47,000

Nine paid holidays plus paid leave between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Up to 80 hours annually in vacation time and up to 96 hours annually in sick leave.
