Community radio station KAXE has served rural Northern Minnesota since 1976, broadcasting in Grand Rapids, Bemidji and Brainerd. In 2023, it launched a newsroom to expand its commitment to communities through trusted journalism, inclusive storytelling and public service. KAXE highlights underrepresented voices, supports civic engagement and celebrates the region’s diverse people and landscapes.

Open Position

Location: Grand Rapids, Minnesota

Beat: Minnesota’s Mississippi River headwaters region

Position:

Northern Minnesota is home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Water is central to the region’s economy and culture, and everything that impacts the river here flows downstream. This reporter covers a wide variety of topics about the river basin, including agriculture, mining and lumber, tourism, environmental policy, recreation, and how Minnesotans and Indigenous communities live with and celebrate the river. The reporter uses writing, audio, data and more to produce thoughtful, enriching coverage.

Salary and Benefits:
$40,000-$50,000, depending on years of experience.

Four weeks of PTO plus 11 paid holidays; health insurance (partial company paid); dental and vision coverage; SEP contribution (company paid); life insurance ($25,000 death benefit); company-issued equipment (laptop, recording kit, mixer, mic, headphones).

Moving Stipend: Could potentially offer a $1,000-$2,500 moving stipend, depending on the distance of the move.
