Austin Free Press is a non-profit, digital news platform, who seeks input from community members to guide content. Before publishing we partnered with our local historically Black university, Huston-Tillotson, to train underrepresented students as journalists and to write for AFP. Our goal is to increase accuracy in news reporting by centering our coverage on underserved communities and issues, and promote civil dialogue to empower all Austinites to make more informed decisions about our community.

Open Position

Location: Austin, Texas

Beat: Housing, Growth and Equity beat.

Position:

Investigate the intersection of growth, governance, and inequality, tracking how public and private forces transform neighborhoods and examining the impacts on residents who are displaced or struggle to remain. Through watchdog reporting, data analysis, and in-depth community storytelling, this beat holds decision-makers accountable and helps Austinites understand the true costs of a city that markets prosperity while sacrificing affordability along with many people who helped build Austin.

Salary and Benefits: $65,000 - $70,000

Health insurance stipend to be confirmed and all major holidays plus two weeks paid vacation. The health insurance stipend is $2,500.

Moving Stipend: $1,000 moving stipend for those moving to the area.
