Description:
Note: this job listing is in addition to a Staff Reporter position we are hiring. You can see that listing here.
Appen Media hires freelance contributors on a rolling basis. The newsroom has a robust system in place to assign coverage to this cohort. Essentially, once accepted to the program freelancers go on a mailing list to receive pitches from the newsroom. Assignments are given on a first-come-first-served basis to eligible contributors. Writers are able to apply and then accept pitches to fit their schedules and interests.
During the onboarding process, Appen Media trains contributors on accepted style and submission guidelines. The newsroom then expects freelancers to adjust future reporting based on notes and past edits. All reporters — staff and contract — must follow Appen's editorial standards and should expect their work to undergo the newsroom's factchecking.
Assignments vary between in-person around the north Metro Atlanta area and some are remote-friendly. Expect stories like community events, government meetings our staff cannot attend due to scheduling conflicts and human interest stories. We do have staff dedicated to sports reporting, but athletic assignments can come up from time to time.
This program is good for:
— Sharp, skilled writers to develop their talents in a way that benefits their community
— Early career journalists to get professional experience and editing
— Seasoned reporters to collect assignments on their own time
If you feel like you fit in one of these categories, email your resume to Director of Content & Development Carl Appen at carl@appenmedia.com with "Freelance Reporter" in the subject line.
Appen may also work with established freelance reporters on larger-scale projects or those which require specialized skills. If you have a story pitch that falls in those categories, reach out to Carl.
