Contract Political Fundraising Copywriter (Progressive)

Location: Remote

Type: Contract

Time Commitment: ~20 hours per week

Start Date: Immediate

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced political fundraising copywriter to support progressive campaigns and organizations through compelling, urgent, and values-driven written content. This is a contract position for someone who understands both journalistic storytelling and the mechanics of digital political fundraising.

The ideal candidate has journalism experience and treats every fundraising email like a mini-reported story: grounded in facts, sourced from credible reporting, and written under tight deadlines. They know how to turn complex or fast-moving news about money in politics and U.S. foreign policy into clear, emotionally resonant, and newsworthy fundraising appeals.

This role is perfect for a journalist who wants to apply their fact-checking skills, news judgment, and headline instincts to high-impact digital fundraising that makes a real difference.

Responsibilities

* Write and edit persuasive fundraising emails, SMS messages, and digital appeals

* Rapidly respond to news cycles and political developments with clear, compelling copy

* Monitor major outlets and social platforms for breaking news related to money in politics and corruption, and quickly pitch fundraising angles rooted in that coverage

* Verify key claims, statistics, and narratives in every fundraising email, ensuring all copy is accurate, properly sourced, and aligned with research

* Collaborate with campaign strategists to develop messaging arcs and fundraising narratives

* Translate news articles, reports, and investigations into supporter-friendly fundraising emails that feel timely, have a clear “why now,” and can stand up to journalistic scrutiny

* Adapt tone and content for different audiences, including base supporters and newer lists

* Revise copy based on performance feedback and strategic goals

* Occasionally assist with messaging for landing pages, donation forms, or social content as needed

Required Qualifications

* Proven track record writing newsy fundraising emails, press-facing content, or reported newsletters that drive reader action (petitions, donations, calls, etc.)

* 2+ years of experience in journalism, political reporting, editing, or fact-checking (newsroom, investigative outlet, or similar)

* Demonstrated ability to synthesize multiple news sources into a single, coherent, accurate narrative under deadline

* Strong fact-checking instincts and comfort working with citations, primary documents, and reputable media sources

* Strong understanding of progressive politics and Democratic campaign environments

* Ability to write quickly, clearly, and persuasively under tight deadlines

* Comfort working independently in a fast-moving political environment

* Excellent attention to detail and editorial judgment

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience covering money-in-politics or corruption as a reporter, researcher, or editor

* Background in investigative reporting, research, or opposition research

* Familiarity with A/B testing, subject line strategy, and conversion-driven copy

* Experience writing for email and SMS fundraising platforms

* Ability to balance urgency with credibility and narrative integrity
