Description:
Capital city newspaper seeks state government reporter
The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, the capital city’s longest-running and most trusted media organization, is looking for a dynamic journalist with a passion for government accountability, enterprise and solutions-driven reporting to serve as our state government reporter.
Do you enjoy telling readers how government decisions will impact their daily lives?
Would you enjoy working with other reporters and photographers to provide readers with the most comprehensive coverage of the state Capitol?
Are you energized by breaking news stories first online, and then working to provide the deeper, broader context behind the event?
Do you aspire to learn from and support other journalists as part of a dynamic newsroom team?
If so, we want you to join us in Cheyenne! With more than 150 years of history covering southeast Wyoming, the WTE’s readers depend on us for coverage of city, county and state government, crime and court, health care, education, entertainment, sports and much more. The winner of first place in General Excellence from the National Newspaper Association Foundation four of the last five years, including in 2025, the WTE is committed to providing subscribers with the news they need, when they need it and in a format that best fits their lifestyle, whether that’s through our mobile app, on our website, on social media or in print.
Essential skills for our state government reporter include: the ability to turn around a story on a tight deadline from meetings that can last an hour or all day; clear, concise writing that tells readers what they need to know without wasting their time and bogging them down in government jargon; a willingness to collaborate with fellow newsroom team members to cover the news, regardless of when and where it happens; and a solid foundation in news writing and AP style.
Preferred skills include: knowledge of the BLOX content management system; experience with or willingness to learn reporting and editing skills for our weekly podcast; photography skills, or a willingness to learn; data analysis using spreadsheets, databases, etc.
If you feel like you’re the right journalist for the job, please send a resume, cover letter and three to five references to Managing Editor Brian Martin at bmartin@wyomingnews.com.
Cheyenne is conveniently located 90 minutes north of Denver and 45 minutes east of Laramie, home of Wyoming’s only four-year university. We are less than two hours from Rocky Mountain National Park, and close to many other scenic outdoor areas, including great places to hike, fish, ski and bike. If you’re looking for a small city that has plenty of amenities, but still maintains a small-town feel, this is the perfect fit for you!
