Description:
Position Overview
A strong independent community newspaper in rural Iowa is looking for a reporter who can write, take photos, and get to know people.
You will cover city councils, school boards, ballgames, community events, and ribbon cuttings. That’s the straightforward part. The real job is learning a community from the inside out, figuring out who does what, why it matters, and why small-town residents care deeply about their neighbors, their schools, and their towns. We are 100 percent local.
This position will focus on reporting and content generation for the communities of Harlan (Shelby County), and surrounding areas. The role has some flexibility for remote work.
What We Expect (a.k.a. the Non-Negotiables)
· Accuracy in reporting
· Curiosity and a willingness to ask good questions
· Getting names right
· A readiness to get out of the office and walk around town
· Comfort working from other locations
· Valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications
· Previous reporting or writing experience, preferably with a newspaper or news organization
· Working knowledge of AP Style
· Photography experience, with an eye for storytelling, action, and composition
· Basic familiarity with Adobe InDesign or similar layout software (or willingness to learn)
· Ability to juggle multiple assignments and deadlines independently
· Strong communication and organizational skills
Benefits
· 401(k) with employer match after one year
· Healthcare coverage
· Paid sick time and vacation available after 90 days
· A family-friendly, supportive work environment

If you believe local stories matter, enjoy building relationships, and don’t mind being known as “the newspaper person” everywhere you go, this might be a great fit.
