Summary:

Southern California News Group, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking an experienced and driven Lakers Beat Writer to cover one of the most influential sports franchises in the world. This reporter will follow the Los Angeles Lakers year-round in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, delivering breaking news, game coverage, features, and analysis across digital and print platforms. The role requires frequent travel during the season, strong news judgment, and the ability to perform consistently under daily deadlines.


What you will do:
 

  • Cover the Los Angeles Lakers year-round, including frequent travel to road games during the season (approximately 41 road games).

  • Report daily on breaking news, practices, games, and team developments with availability nights, weekends, and during travel.

  • Deliver clean, accurate copy on tight deadlines, including game stories, features, analysis, and enterprise reporting.

  • Develop sources and produce original reporting that goes beyond game coverage.

  • Collaborate closely with assigning editors, reporters, print production, and digital/social teams.

  • Produce and publish stories across all platforms, including print, online, social media, newsletters, multimedia, and occasional on-camera opportunities.


What you will bring:

  • Experience covering professional or major college sports at a daily newspaper or established sports outlet, with NBA experience strongly preferred.

  • Prior daily beat reporting experience preferred, including consistent deadline production.

  • Proven ability to report and write accurately on a daily basis.

  • Strong news judgment and storytelling skills across breaking news, game coverage, features, and analysis.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with editors, teammates, and external stakeholders.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Some college or a degree in journalism, communication or related field is preferred.


Benefits and Compensation:

The hourly range is $28.85 - $31.25 + phone stipend.
