Description:
The Role:
The Nevada Independent fellowship is an intensive, hands-on opportunity to learn from the experienced reporters and editors at our nonprofit, nonpartisan news outlet. From day one, fellows will be challenged to work on a broad range of sophisticated stories that explore how politics and policy affect everyday Nevadans, with plenty of mentorship and support along the way. The experience spans a key election season in a swing state and the state’s biennial legislative session, and fellows are encouraged to propose further beats and specialties that meet the needs of the newsroom.
Fellows will also work to present and promote their reporting in multiple formats, including through TikTok and other vertical video platforms, and learn to produce rigorous fact checks. Because the fellowship is a key pipeline from which we have hired full-time reporters, we are seeking serious candidates who aspire to journalism careers and have had successful internships or work experiences in newsrooms in the past.
Time frame:
The initial term of the fellowship is six months, with renewal available for an additional six months contingent on successful completion of the first term. Start and end dates are negotiable, but the suggested term of employment is June 1, 2026, through May 28, 2027.
Requirements:
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree by start of the fellowship term, with at least one prior internship for a news organization
- Ability to work full time (40 hours a week) from Nevada
- Internet access and a laptop (we do not maintain a physical office so this is a mostly remote work opportunity)
- Ability to work weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (or until your planned story is filed)
- Flexibility to work some weekends and evenings (as required by events)
- Reliable transportation and the ability to cover events in person
- Strong writing skills (a writing and style test will be administered)
- Strong internet research and information-gathering skills
- Experience with table-building or working in Excel
- Willingness to do some data entry and appear in videos to promote stories
- Ability to multitask or change directions from day to day without getting flustered
- Ability to self-manage and work independently
- Ability to generate story ideas
Desired skills:
- Data journalism and/or info-mapping skills
- Experience in one or more data graphics platforms (like Google Fusion, Tableau, Data Wrapper, Infogram, etc.)
- Spanish language proficiency (including the ability to comfortably interview people, present scripted vertical videos and discuss your work conversationally on a podcast in Spanish) is a big plus
Pay and benefits:
- Indy fellows are short-term employees.
- At least $18 per hour
- $25 per paycheck (every two weeks) cellphone use allowance
- Generous PTO and holiday package
