Description:
The Gazette News Group is seeking a Vice President of Content to lead our newsroom and help
shape what local journalism looks like in the Capital Region of New York. This
is the top newsroom role, and it requires someone who can balance the
fundamentals of strong reporting and ethics with a modern, audience-focused
approach that grows our digital reach and strengthens our community
connections.

position requires someone who communicates clearly, collaborates across
departments, and can help create a unified strategy for where our journalism is
going.
As Vice President of
Content, you’ll set the priorities for our coverage, guide how we listen to our
community, and make sure the journalism we publish meets the high standards our
readers expect. You’ll play a key role in helping us grow our digital audience,
increase conversions, and expand coverage into areas that help new readers find
us and stay with us.
We’re looking for someone
who understands the importance of both traditional news coverage and
non-traditional content and can help us continue to grow our service
journalism, lifestyle coverage, explainers and guides.
You should be comfortable
being out in the community, building relationships, and making sure our
coverage truly reflects the people and issues of our region, including
residents who may not always feel represented in local news.
This is also a senior
leadership role in the company. You’ll help set strategy, manage budgets,
develop staff, and work closely with other departments to make sure our
newsroom is aligned with our company’s goals. Success in this role is measured
by the impact of our journalism, the growth of our audience and subscriptions,
and the culture you build inside the newsroom.
What
You’ll Do
• Set the editorial vision
and oversee content strategy across print and digital.
• Use analytics and audience insights to inform decisions while staying
grounded in solid news judgment.
• Drive digital performance, including audience growth, engagement, conversions
and retention through smart use of AI, SEO, social,
newsletters, and new formats.
• Guide community-listening efforts so we stay connected to what matters most
to our readers.
• Oversee enterprise projects and ensure we consistently produce journalism
that has real impact.
• Approve front-page content and work with design staff to deliver strong
visual presentations in print and online.
• Put in place a newsroom training plan covering reporting, editing, ethics,
digital skills and new technologies like AI.
• Lead and support companywide strategic initiatives, especially those tied to
audience, revenue and product.
• Ensure deadlines are met and workflows run smoothly.
• Represent the Daily Gazette in the community and build relationships that
strengthen our journalism.
What You
Bring
• 7-10 years of newsroom
leadership experience.
• A deep understanding
of audience engagement and experience in driving this in a modern newsroom
• A bachelor’s degree in journalism or relevant professional experience.
• Experience managing teams, overseeing budgets and leading strategic efforts.
• Strong reporting and editing skills and the ability to raise the quality of
the entire team.
• A clear understanding of digital growth strategies, including SEO, social
media, newsletters and analytics.
• A track record of building
relationships in the community and engaging audiences that haven’t always been
reached by local news.
• Experience across a mix of content types including news, sports, lifestyle,
business, service journalism.
• Curiosity and openness to new tools and approaches, including AI.
• Familiarity with print production and how to create a strong print reading
experience.
• Strong organizational skills and an ability to manage multiple priorities at
once.
• Proficiency with content management systems, analytics tools and digital
storytelling platforms.
